Risks for coastal communities are inevitable, says CSIRO report - Environment

This article starts: “NSW COASTAL communities are at much greater risk from climate change than had originally been thought, with a new study by scientists from the State Government and the CSIRO showing storms could increase by as much as 50 per cent by 2070, while sea levels could rise by 12 centimetres more than expected.

Storms could be more frequent and more intense, some low-lying areas could be permanently flooded and beaches and estuaries reshaped by changes in sea levels and wave and weather patterns, the study says.”

In Northland we have had two very damaging storms already this year, and I think it is important that Councils reassess the risk management strategies. We used to rely on statistics that told us that something was a once in 50 year event or a a one in 100 year event, but I would like to know whether these assessments of risk have been adjusted to take into account the slow but steady changes already visible in regard to Climate Change.
